A minimum of thirteen passengers lose their lives and ninety-eight hurt in rail accident in Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and management of the country's major government projects.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” stated the country's president.

The official announced that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the previous administration, whose term ended the prior year. This venture was closely associated with his administration's developmental goals for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both train projects was managed by the armed forces, marking a significant expansion of its role in civilian works. They were executed at an rapid speed, surpassing expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled ongoing concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an previous accident this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the catastrophe, the chief of a key rival party called for an prompt halt in the building and running of all similar projects.

This halt was suggested while awaiting a comprehensive safety audit. The party emphasized that the loss of life "requires prompt explanations."

In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been running in total adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and management of these strategic undertakings.
