Fed Cuts Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The United States central bank lowered borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction this year during financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Price increases has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, such as the number of new jobs added to the market and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in August.

The number of positions added to the economy in the summer month was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Ongoing Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to release last month’s employment data in early October, it suspended its publication when the shutdown started. Employment data company ADP reported earlier this month that the private sector eliminated 32,000 positions in September, a indication that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, which he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Reveals Gradual Rise

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Costs increased three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In April, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
