Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for hours when dozens of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations affecting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend floated over the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and near the border with Belarus.

A minimum of 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminals use a technique that proves especially affected by weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and participants so that these practices become unprofitable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the region.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
